Bicycle Portage Strap

Bicycle Portage Strap

To complete this DIY project, I bought a shoulder of leather in my color choice and thickness from my local leather shop.  Once I measured the dimensions of my bicycle, I traced out my custom pattern and got to cutting with an X-Acto knife.  All of the components are pictured that I’m making for my bicycle; a portage/shoulder strap, handlebar wraps + mud flaps.  More to come on the other pieces later…

A simple leather punch, hammer, and cutting board were the only tools I needed to get an even, professional looking finish.  Once done, I coated the leather in mink oil to darken it so that it matched the leather trim on my bike bags a bit better + I wanted to add a layer of protection from the elements.  Next, I soaked the strap in water for a few minutes to allow it to stretch and become easy to work with before I began sewing it onto my bicycle.  A simple rounded needle so I didn’t stab myself and some waxed cord to attach the leather to my bike frame were also purchased at my local leather shop.  As it dried, it shrunk up for a nice, snug fit on my bike frame.  This weekend I got a couple of compliments on it while I was at the bike shop - what a simple way to add an element of personal style as well as functionality to your bike!
